After a day at the Taronga Zoo and a little rest back at the Laws, we decided on Japanese food for takeaway (takeout) dinner.  A couple of blocks from the Laws was a Japanese Ramen shop called Goshu Ramen Tei which also has some outdoor seating.

We ordered the Nego-Miso Ramen, Chicken Yakisoba, Gyoza and Edamame for the girls, Chicken Cutlet Bento Box with Vegetable Tempura and Agedashi Tofu, and Spicy Wagyu Beef Udon.  The food was decent and the ramen had good broth.

MCA Cafe

Address: 140 George Street, The Rocks, Sydney, Australia
Phone: +61 2 9245 2400
Website: http://www.mca.com.au/visit/mca-cafe-sculpture-terrace/

After church, we decided to take a walk to the Circular Quay (main ferry and train terminal) area and have lunch at the MCA Cafe.  The Cafe is located at the 4th floor of the MCA (Museum of Contemporary Art).  Too bad we didn’t spend more time in the MCA as there were lots of things to do for kids and families.  Of course, tours and collections are also available for viewing.

Since the MCA Cafe is on the 4th floor, it overlooks the Circular Quay area and gives a stunning view of both the Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House (when a cruise ship is not docked for the day like it was when we went).

The drinks we ordered were the Rose Hip & Mint Fruit Punch, the Old-Fashioned Lemonade, a Chocolate Milkshake, a Iced coffee with Vanilla Ice Cream, and Lemon Iced Tea.

The food we ordered were Mac and Cheese for the kids (which was okay), Prawns and Kale Pesto Fettuccine (which was good), Crispy Pork Belly Salad with lemongrass (savory), Chips (French Fries) with Sriracha Mayo on the side which were tasty.

Not too shabby for our first full meal in Australia.  A wide (and rotating monthly) selection of food and stunning views.

Wailana Coffee House

Address: 1860 Ala Moana Blvd., Honolulu, HI 96815
Phone: (808) 955-1764

Since we ate a late lunch, we walked across the street to the Wailana Coffee House for a somewhat late dinner after chilling at the lagoon.

I ordered the guava-filled french toast and it was yummy. It was also interesting that there was coconut syrup available. You don’t see that often.

Joyce ordered the Hawaiian Breakfast: corned beef hash, scrambled eggs, and roasted banana.

Melody ordered the blueberry pancakes and Emily ordered the banana pancakes.  It’s not mentioned on the menu, but you can order a short stack of 2 pancakes instead of the 3 on the menu.

On the table are three different jams: Strawberry, Orange Marmalade, and Guava.  When your food comes out three syrups are brought out: regular maple, boysenberry, and coconut.

Service was good as we got water refills frequently and were attended to often.

There’s an IHOP next door.  However, you get a better deal (prices) at Wailana Coffee House, and IHOP doesn’t have coconut syrup or guava jam.  Supposedly, the eggs benedict (we didn’t try) are really good at Wailana too.  Wailana also has Macadamia Nut and Coconut pancakes.

After getting off the airplane and taking a taxi to the Hilton Hawaiian Village for our overnight layover, we settled into our room and grabbed a late lunch at the Pronto Pickle Grab & Go and Lanikai Juice downstairs on the hotel grounds.

Pronto Pickle Grab & Go is a takeout/cafe type of place with a large variety of freshly-made or pre-packaged sandwiches, hot food, salads, etc. Of course, Emily decides to order the three cheese pizza. I also ordered the pineapple & golden raisin coleslaw and the teriyaki chicken/pork yakisoba.  There was also a baked ham sandwich we didn’t get to take a picture of.

For some reason, there was a bit a of ginger in the coleslaw, which the girls didn’t like, so I ended up eating all of it.  The baked ham sandwich was a bit plain with the exception of the provided mustard seed condiment.  There was a good amount of meat in the teriyaki chicken/pork yakisoba.  The three cheese pizza tasted like any other cheese pizza.

Emily wanted to grab a smoothie as a drink, so we made our way over to Lanikai Juice.  I ordered a Guava Lava for Joyce and myself to share and a Strawberry Shaka for each of the kids.  We all love smoothies, so you can imagine how it went down!

Starting the first week of 2015, the new Philz Coffee Truck started setting up shop a block from my workplace!  Days and hours are: Monday through Friday, 6am to 3pm.  Lines started forming, so I decided to go during non-meal hours to try and catch a short line.  The truck is based off of the successful local San Francisco coffee chain: Philz Coffee.  They do gourmet coffee – one cup at a time.  They grind the beans for your cup at the time of order and you can customize the cream/milk and sugar content.

Before going, I perused the online menu on Urbanspoon or Menuism and decided to get Philtered Soul since I love all things sweet.  I chose “sweet” for the amount of sugar and wanted 2% milk for the cream.  However, the barista said they had a nonfat milk mixed with real whipping cream, so I decided to get that instead.  The coffee lived up to its hype and was AMAZING!

philz5

Philtered Soul is: a medium dark roast coffee at its sweetest. the philtered soul has a burst of chocolate with an overwhelmingly satisfying aftertaste sure to please your souls deepest desires. a favorite of all coffee drinkers who posses a sweet tooth. note: this blend may contain traces of hazelnut.

***Update 3/13/2015***: I tried the Mint Mojito Iced Coffee and it was smooth and creamy as advertised.  No wonder why everyone loves it.  Love the fresh mint leaves as well!

***Update 1/23/2015***: I tried the Hot Chocolate and it was sweet and you could taste the richness of the fresh cocoa beans.  Philz also whipped cream fresh and added it to the drink.

Towards the front of the truck, they have a small slide-up window for pastries to compliment your beverage, if you so desire.

Having the Philz Coffee Truck only a block away from work could be a really good thing…or really bad thing.

The Me So Hungry food truck has been stopping by 1 block from my workplace recently, so I decided to finally try them out.  I ordered the Slider Sampler to taste the variety of their menu.  I should try their sweet potato fries, french fries, or onion rings too next time.

mesohungry1

Slider Sampler (love the soft bun on each of the sliders):

Cali Slider (left on picture) – Angus Beef, Smoked Apple-Wood Bacon, Balsamic Sauteed Onions, Gorgonzola Cheese.  The slider had a strong (maybe overpowering) Gorgonzola taste.  Love the balsamic sauteed onions and fresh greens.

Flyin’ Hawaiian Slider (center on picture) – Chicken Breast, Crispy Maui Onions, Chipotle Aioli.  There was a generous amount of shredded chicken and Sweet Chili Sauce.  The slider was a bit messy from the overabundance of sauce that overshadowed the crispy Maui onions.

Spicy PBJ Slider (right on picture) – Peanut Butter, Jelly, Sriracha, Smoked Apple-Wood Bacon Crumble, Sharp Cheddar.  Unbeatable combo of PB&J and bacon.  There was a hint of heat from the Sriracha.

Seoulful Korean Fried Chicken

I passed by the Seoulful Korean Fried Chicken truck on the way to lunch and decided to try it out today.  It’s a sister truck to Hiyaaa! (Vietnamese Food Truck).

seoulful2

The Order: Rice & Slaw Combo (Dark Meat)

seoulful3

Coleslaw had mild vinaigrette with cut-up jalapeno mixed in with shredded cabbage and cilantro.  Fried chicken (thigh and drumstick) was nicely breaded/fried and tasted deliciously sweet (ordered with the sweet soy glaze).  Sweet, sushi-type, short-grained Calrose rice lined the bottom of the takeout box.  This was a good and basic fried chicken combo platter.

seoulful4

***Update 3/24/2015***: I tried the Garlic Fries and received a box overflowing with fries and garlic….just how I like it!  I also asked for a side of sriracha mayo (as pictured).

seoulful5

***Update 4/21/2015***: I tried the Seoulful Sandwich which consists of fried chicken strips (chose the sweet soy glaze option), gochujang (couldn’t really taste that much of it), aioli (the sriracha mayo), and house slaw on a soft, sweet bun.  There was a lot of house slaw and the fried chicken was perfect and not overly-breaded.  I’m also a sucker for the soft, sweet bun.  The sandwich was excellent.
