It’s been 7 years since Amy Grant has been on a Christmas album and it’s amazing that her musical career has been sustaining longer than I’ve been alive. I grew up listening to her worship songs and attended a couple of concerts as she broke through to mainstream. This Christmas album is a compilation of catchy/popular secular Christmas songs (White Christmas, I’ve Got My Love To Keep Me Warm, Baby It’s Cold Outside, Christmas Don’t Be Late) as well as some Christmas carols (Joy to the World and O Come All Ye Faithful).  To Be Together is the hit pop single off of this album.

If you get the physical album with liner notes, you get to see past personal Christmas family photos from the Grants and Gills.

Phil Wickham – Children of God

.
childrenofgodPhil Wickham – Children of God
Label: Fair Trade/Colombia
Release date: April 22, 2016
Website | FB | IG | Twitter | iTunes | SpotifyYouTube#ChildrenofGod

Phil Wickham’s Children of God album comes after the discovery and eventual surgery to remove a vocal polyp on one of his vocal cords. The surgery would leave him speechless for an entire month with no promises to ever sing professionally again. This all happened on the heels of his #1 single/worship song and BMI’s Christian Song of the Year: This Is Amazing Grace.

The result is this new album that contains infectious energy with songs that build to dynamically loud making you want to move and dance.

It starts with a ethereal and rockish rendition of Doxology. Better Than Life is lively with a dance-beat to move to. Your Love Awakens Me is projected to be a hit single. The Secret Place has nice harmonies.  Repetitive and pulsing riffs are sprinkled throughout Wide Awake. My All In All is heartfelt while Starmaker is reflective. The title track, Children of God, is a dance anthem. Stand In Awe comes pouring out straight from the heart. There’s an interesting accentuated riff for Body Mind & Soul. Short rhythmic reverb occurs in As It Is In Heaven. Finally, Spirit of God is more acoustic in sound.

– Norm

4. The Secret Place by Phil Wickham feat. Madison Cunningham

12. Spirit of God

About Phil Wickham:
Marking his first LP in three years, Children Of God comes on the heels of the impactful single “This Is Amazing Grace,” which was certified RIAA Gold and named BMI’s Christian Song of the Year as it topped radio charts. This powerful anthem was recently recognized as the most-sung worship song in the North American church by Christian Copyright Licensing International (CCLI). Children of God is filled with songs sure to follow in those footsteps and become new worship favorites. Heralded by the single “Your Love Awakens Me,” the album is available everywhere now.

Phil Wickham is, at the core, a humble and sincere artist who writes songs and worships God using the medium of music. It is with that brush that he paints images of a loving and creative God across the canvases of listeners’ hearts and minds. The evidence of this gift has been apparent on all of his critically acclaimed efforts: Phil Wickham (2006), Cannons (2007), Heaven & Earth (2009), Response (2011), and The Ascension (2013), which debuted at No. 2 on the SoundScan Christian Albums Chart and in the Top 40 on the Billboard 200. His gold-certified single “This Is Amazing Grace” gave Wickham his first career No. 1, holding the top spot on Billboard’s National Christian Audience Chart for 13 consecutive weeks.  The honor’s continued as the single was named Billboard’s 2014 No. 1 Christian Airplay Song of the Year and BMI’s 2015 Christian Song of the Year. In addition to its success at radio, the song has become a beloved anthem in the modern church, increasing Wickham’s recognition as a gifted artist and songwriter with a true heart of worship.

The annual live Passion album usually comes out around March or April following the New Year’s weekend conference. This year’s album released on January 1st as the album was instead recorded in studio. All the songs (except one) are originals and written specifically for the conference. Some standouts from the album are Simple Pursuit and Your Grace Amazes Me from Passion’s female worship leaders. The title track has good build and contrasting dynamics. Matt Redman offers a great worship anthem in I Turn To Christ. Kristian Stanfill covers one of the top worship songs of 2015: Good Good Father (written by Housefires). Nichole Nordeman – The Unmaking

Giveaway info at the end of the post.

Released August 28, 2015

ABOUT The Unmaking

“Before things in our lives can be resurrected and given new life, certain things must die. Before beauty blooms in spring, roots must do the hard work under the hard frozen soil of winter. Before you renovate and re-build, you tear down the parts of the structure that are weak or damaged or dangerous. Before we make, we must unmake.” Nichole Nordeman

I LOVE Nichole Nordeman’s new album. I tried to pick one or two of the songs that stood out to me, but they are all great. I think I have been each of the places Nichole sings about in each of the songs. I wanted to share a bit about each one and the lyrics that speak to me.

1The Unmaking – I’m fairly certain I have forgotten God’s faithfulness many times, and every time there is a breaking that happens before I can see clearly and remember His love and grace and peace and patience and mercy and love again… And when I remember those things, I know there is an ending to those things He has not called me to, and something new, something more beautiful begins. Love the piano in this song.
.
.
.
.
.
.
2Not to Us – I actually wanted to highlight some other lyrics in this song at first, but the more I listened to it, the more powerful these words became. If all that we do would be for His glory, and we didn’t have our own agendas and judgments, we would be able to see more clearly grace and love.
.
..
.

.
.
.
.
3Name – In the song, Nichole talks about a dark heart, small cave, bitter night, and mud. None of those things are lovely, but I love that these images are a contrast to the life we have in Him. When you hear the lyrics of the remainder of the song, it is even clearer how deep His love is for us. How amazing that the Creator of the universe knows my name! A lively song with a message that He is a God who is alive in us.
.
..
.

.
.
4Love You More – He is a God of second (and more!) chances. I love that because I need lots of chances! The song also says, “I keep thinking there’s a limit,” but there’s not…He keeps forgiving us and loving us. The lyrics refer to different stories in the Bible, and it reminds me that no one is perfect, not even those who He has used to do great things. And we shouldn’t chase perfection, we are to chase the Perfecter. Very reflective song.
.
..
.

Something Out of Me – This ties in the last song…it references the story of the feeding of the 5,000, and how He can use anyone to do amazing and big things, even if we only have some bread and fish, He can use that to feed 5,000 people! Catchy tunes for this one. 🙂

Slow Down – If don’t have some tissue (the facial kind) nearby, step away and get some. You’ll need it for this song. Even just have lived through these 8 years of motherhood, it is true that the days are long, but the years are quick. There are moments we don’t want to ever deal with again (pukey babies and poopy diapers), but the snuggles, the “firsts”, the giggles, those moments when they think mom and dad know everything and can fix anything, they are so cherished and those are the moments we want them to slow down and quit the growing up business. It is amazing to watch them become their own person and to discover the world, but for now, I’ll take and savor every minute I can of their hugs and kisses and “I love you”s.

ABOUT This is Not A Test

All right, friends! If you were a dc Talk fan, or even if you weren’t hip to them back in the 90s, I think you will still enjoy TobyMac’s latest album, This Is Not A Test. From the beginning to end, it definitely drops the beat. If you looking for some upbeat music to work out or dance to, this is it! Get this album (or WIN IT, see info below), and your kids will think you are pretty rad…if you’re a kid, you will think your parents are completely ridiculous but kinda cool, but not cool enough to let your friends know. Anyhow, this is not the typical genre of music I listen to, but it’s fun and has a lot of great featured artists. I am really diggin’ Like A Match, Love Broke ThruBeyond Me, and Light Shine Bright, but all the others are growing on me too. 😉 The links are to the lyrics videos or audio. Take a listen, and really listen to the words in the song.

From Beyond Me

Yeah, You gave me the stars, put them out of my reach
Called me to waters a little too deep
Oh, I’ve never been so aware of my need
Yeah, you keep on making me see
****
You take me to the place where I know I need You
Straight to the depths that I can’t handle on my own

ABOUT TobyMac

Toby McKeehan (known professionally as TobyMac) is a husband, father, performer, songwriter, producer, and businessman. Growing up in the northern Virginia suburbs adjacent to Washington D.C. helped instill his love for rap music. While attending Liberty University during the mid-80s, Toby met Michael Tait and Kevin Max Smith and these three friends formed the Grammy-winning, platinum-selling group dc Talk. Toby began his solo career in 1999 with his first solo album, Momentum, releasing in 2001. Momentum has been followed by four additional studio albums, along with his first live album in 2008. This Is Not A Test is his 6th studio album to be released. Toby still clings to such rootsy notions as hard work, persistence, patience, and – perhaps most relevant of all – the power of music, which he insists is still what keeps him going. “It’s the truth,” he says. “I still believe that a song can penetrate a heart. I believe God can use a song to open someone’s mind and heart.”

Hillsong United – Empires

Giveaway info at the end of post.
empires-album-coverHillsong United – Empires
Label: Hillsong, Sparrow Records
Released May 26, 2015
Website | FB | IG | Twitter | YouTube |
#EMPIRES | Summer Tour

Empires is Hillsong United’s fourth studio album.  Like the rise and fall of worldly empires, so do the dynamics of the songs contained in the album.  Most of the songs are slow and more reflective in nature.  There is only one upbeat, if that, song on the whole album and that is Rule which has somewhat of a club feel to it.  Most of the songs in the album start off with sparse verses and build in terms of instrumentation and volume.  Verses dynamically contrast choruses which may contrast bridges.  There are also spots of musical space between sections of a couple of songs for reflection, interpretation, and spontaneity.  Musical riffs are repetitive throughout the songs which gives a sense of consistency through the changing dynamics of each song.  The Empires album leaves you reflective and wanting.

Touch The Sky was the first single released and first presented during the Vision 2015 presentation of Hillsong Church in February.  It was later performed on the Today Show.  The song was written after a study of The Beatitudes (Matthew 5).  Prince of Peace and Heart Like Heaven followed shortly after before the release of the album.  Each worship leader represented in Hillsong United is featured on one or two songs on the album.

Hillsong United features a good number of Hillsong’s main songwriters and worship leaders.  They write many of the songs churches sing in worship today.  Hillsong United was formed back in the 1990s as the youth band for Hillsong Church.  Each month, the Junior and Senior High groups would get together for a “united” night.  Later, the youth groups would hold an annual conference where the live album recordings were created.

When our family visited Hillsong Church’s main Hills Campus on March 1st, JD (from Hillsong United) was leading worship that particular Sunday.  The second picture you see below is from our March 1st visit.

I got a chance to listen in on a phone chat with Taya Smith last week. Some fellow FlyBy bloggers join in for a Twitter party. It was fun to hear how the album came together, and Taya shared some wisdom with us about worship. Below are some (paraphrased) snippets of what she shared, and I made a little Storify thingie of what we tweeted through the conversation.

If we are pouring out but not being filled up, we need to stop and spend time with Him.

Have people who can journey with you, especially someone a little further ahead of you, and allow them to pull you up when you are down.

“I’m really passionate about the song SKY SPILLS OVER. It was fun creating it in the studio and I’ve been overwhelmed at the response it gets when we perform it live every night. My son Ryan is a really talented filmmaker so I always enjoy working with him on a project. But what made this project even more special was that 3 of my own grandkids were in the video. This video was a lot of fun to make. I hope people enjoy it!”

Here’s the world premiere of his Sky Spills Over music video!!

I love the comments in this Facebook thread about what the song could mean, especially this comment, “Leading the next generation into battle with the Sword of the Spirit. Teaching them to rely not on their own might, but His!” It is a little more “poetic” than other songs I have heard from him.
