Captive is a movie based on a true story of two people headed down the wrong path. Two strangers who would not have crossed paths with one another in every day life meet in the strangest of circumstances. Ashley Smith (Kate Mara), a mom whose life is turned upside down by loss and addiction, and Brian Nichols (David Oyelowo) a fugitive accused of crimes he denies and now on the run after killing several people. Confused and full of despair, they meet when Brian takes Ashley hostage in her own apartment. They are both trying to grab onto the last bit of hope in their own lives. Miracles upon miracles happen through the seven hours they were together. If it were just a made-up story, none of it would make any sense. Ashley should not even be alive. But this story is a story based on real events. God’s hand was at work in the midst of brokenness and darkness. What a powerful image of how He works! He uses those we would call unworthy to show purpose and love.

There is also bonus content that shows some behind-the-scenes of the movie filming, as well as sharing the story of the real Ashley Smith and where she is today.

I was excited for the opportunity to watch this movie because anything Star Trek-related always reminds me of my grandma. She came to the states from China when I was born. When I was growing up, I remember that she liked to watch Star Trek. Even though she didn’t know any English, she would “translate” to us (my siblings and me) what was going on in the episodes. Anyhow, my girls have gone through the What’s in the Bible? curriculum from Genesis to Revelation at church, and they really enjoy the Christmas DVD as well. I knew they would like watching the latest from VeggieTales creator Phil Vischer!

About The Movie
Galaxy Buck: Mission to Sector 9 takes Buck Denver on a new adventure into outer space. Buck wants to save the galaxy by sharing God’s love to all of the Milky Way, but for now he is working for the Galactic Mission Board handing out tote bags. He doesn’t have a starship, a crew, or much else. But one day, something changes all that, and he gets to go on a mission into deep space. He is doing everything God wants, but things go wrong! In the end, Buck learns a powerful lesson about trusting God with everything.

Like all of Phil Vischer’s creations, we are able to take away some Biblical truth to add to our faith foundation by the end of the story. It is not only Buck who learns a valuable lesson, but we do too! God doesn’t always want us to do big things for Him, He just wants us! He loves us and has a purpose for each of us, sometimes it involves big things, and other times it involves small things. I’m all for handing out tote bags if anyone has them to hand out. 😉

Melody (age 8)
What the movie is about: The movie is about Buck and his friends going to the planet Tallaris. Buck is trying to save the world. When he gets there, he realizes he was only doing it for himself and not for anyone else.
Like: I like that Buck learned a lesson while he was in space.
Dislike: There wasn’t anything I disliked about the movie.
Recommend: I recommend this to all the kids because everyone will like it.
What I learn: God doesn’t always want everyone to do big things. He just wants to be with us.

Emily (age 6)
What the movie is about: The movie is about Buck learning a lesson. Buck didn’t want to send out tote bags. He wanted to go to space and be helpful – to do big things, not small things like handing out tote bags.
Like: I like that he learned a lesson because it makes him helpful.
Dislike: I didn’t like the aliens capturing Buck’s friends.
Recommend: I recommend this to my cousin Sam because he likes Star Wars.
What I learned: God doesn’t always want everyone to do big things. :p

When Calls the Heart

ABOUT THE SERIES
The series is inspired by Janette Oke’s bestselling book series about the Canadian West. “When Calls the Heart” tells the captivating story of Elizabeth Thatcher (Erin Krakow), a young teacher accustomed to her high society life, who receives her first classroom assignment in Coal Valley, a small coal-mining town where life is simple, but often fraught with challenges. Lori Loughlin plays Abigail Stanton, a wife and mother whose husband, the foreman of the mine, along with a dozen other miners, has just been killed in an explosion. The newly widowed women find their faith is tested when they must go to work in the mines to keep a roof over their heads. Elizabeth charms most everyone in Coal Valley, except Constable Jack Thornton (Daniel Lissing) who believes Thatcher’s wealthy father has doomed the lawman’s career by insisting he be assigned in town to protect the shipping magnate’s daughter. Living in a turn of the century coal town, Elizabeth will have to learn the ways of the frontier if she wishes to thrive in the rural west on her own.

MY THOUGHTS
We don’t own a TV by choice, so when we do streaming shows online from their network website, we are pretty picky. I will have to say that if we did have a TV and cable, we would definitely watch When Calls The Heart. From what I know, after season 1 started, there was a surprising following from tons of fans. I am not shocked by this because the story really draws you in! It did take me a few minutes to figure out the story since I didn’t watch season 1, but after that, the characters were great and the story is enthralling. There is humor, there is romance, there is drama…it has a little bit of everything. It took me right back to Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman since it takes place during frontier times in the rural west, and the main character Elizabeth Thatcher also comes from an affluent family that lived in the city. The season starts out with the trial of the coal mining company that had caused the death of the miners in town. There are some shady characters who try to bring the town down, but you’ll have to watch to find out if justice is served. Apparently, there are a few new characters this season, and a love story evolving. If you are the winner of the DVD set, please let me borrow it so I can watch season 1. And if I find the time, I will try to catch the new episodes on itunes or Amazon or whatever people stream things from. :p

ABOUT 23 BLAST
This film is inspired by the true story of Travis Freeman. Travis (played by Mark Hapka) plays high school football  in a small town in Kentucky. He is loved by his local community, not just for his skills on the field, but for being an all-around great guy. In 1997, Travis contracts an infection and overnight he becomes blind. He thought his dreams of playing the game was over, but he overcomes many challenges with the help of his parents, physical therapist, coach, and best friend. He was able to get back on the field and help his team get to the state finals.

You all know I love a feel-good movie, and this is definitely one of those. While the events in the film did not happen exactly the way they did in real life, Travis Freeman did in fact have an unshakeable faith after he became blind. Stories like this is always welcomed over what is typically shown on the big screen targeting young people today. You can read about where Travis is today, and his thoughts about the movie HERE. (There is a 30-second ad before you can get to the article.)

Dolphin Tale 2 (Curriculum Review)

Giveaway info at the end of post.

dolphin-tale-poster-artDolphin Tale 2
Released September 12, 2014
Website | Facebook | Twitter
#DolphinTale2 #HomeschoolDay2014 #WinterHasHope

I had not watched Dolphin Tale when I was given the opportunity to review the curriculum for Dolphin Tale 2, but it just so happens that we saw a copy of Dolphin Tale at the library that same week. The girls wanted to watch it as soon as we got home since their favorite animal right now is the dolphin. Remember, we went to Sea World this summer. 🙂

ABOUT DOLPHIN TALE
It is a sweet story, inspired by a true story, of a boy named Sawyer who helps rescue an injured dolphin who is named Winter. Sawyer’s mom (Ashley Judd) was not too fond of him spending so much time away from school at the marine center, but realized the positive impact it was having on Sawyer as he was going through a difficult time. After Winter loses her tail, her life is in danger, but with the help of Sawyer, marine rescue doctor Clay (Harry Connick Jr.), his daughter Hazel (Cozi Zuehlsdorff), and an army doctor (Morgan Freeman) who specializes in prosthetics, Winter becomes whole again. It is a story of friendship, determination, and strength.

ABOUT DOLPHIN TALE 2
I haven’t watched Dolphin Tale 2, but I am looking forward to seeing it soon! I have read some reviews of it, and it is about Winter losing her surrogate mother, Panama. Because of USDA regulations, Winter cannot be housed alone, as dolphins have to be paired with another dolphin, so the team at Clearwater Marine Hospital are in search of finding a companion for Winter. Pro surfer Bethany Hamilton, who has been an inspiration to many after losing an arm in a shark attack, make an appearance in this film.

DOLPHIN TALE 2 CURRICULUM
I was excited when I saw there was a curriculum for this film. I was even more excited when I saw what was included in this free curriculum!!! Even if you don’t homeschool, I HIGHLY recommend checking out this resource. It is free to join Homeschool Movie Club. It is amazing, and the girls kept asking to do more of the activities.

IMG_9397Each day’s lesson has a short video and a PDF of printables.
Lesson 1: Get To Know Dolphins (anatomy and physical science)
Lesson 2: A Day In The Life Of Dolphins (reading comprehension)
Lesson 3: Dolphins In The Ocean (geography)
Lesson 4: Aquarium Life (composition and art)
Lesson 5: Dolphins and Us (vocabulary and math)

And if you are in Classical Conversations like we are (or even if you’re not), you will be thrilled to know that there is also a curriculum designed specifically for CC! It is a 77-page PDF with lessons on the following subjects: Biology, Physical Science, Geography, Language, Math, Literature, History, Art, and Bible.

ABOUT THE BOXCAR CHILDREN
Four orphaned and homeless siblings happen upon an abandoned boxcar, which with a little creativity and hard work, they gradually furnish with all the comforts of home.
Fearful that they will be sent to live with the reputedly cruel grandfather they have never met, the children keep their new home a secret – until a serious illness forces them to reveal themselves in order to save young Violet.

Featuring an all-star cast of voice actors, including Academy Award Nominee Martin Sheen (Apocalypse Now), J.K. Simmons (Spiderman), Zach Gordon (Diary of a Wimpy Kid), Joey King (Fargo), Mackenzie Foy (Twilight series), and Jadon Sand (LEGO: The Movie), this is the very first full-length, animated feature adaptation of Gertrude Chandler Warner’s best-selling classic!

Melody (age 7)
What the DVD is about: It was about them finding a place to sleep because they were running away from their grandfather. They thought he was mean, but he wasn’t.
Like: I like the characters. I like that it is like the book, and it was exciting too! It was all exciting!
Dislike: I don’t not like anything.
Recommend: Everyone

Emily (age 5)
What the DVD is about: The DVD is about them wanting to find a new house.
Like: I like when grandpa gave them a new house and they can share the house and be a family. I like when they made the boxcar into a house.
Dislike: I didn’t like when they all slipped on the mud.
Recommend: I recommend this to my friends Ashlyn and Jadyn because they will like when the children go and find a new house.

Notes from Melody and Emily’s mom:
If you read The Boxcar Children as a young child, you will know that you are in for a treat with this new Collector’s Edition of The Boxcar Children DVD. The movie is not an exact re-telling of the first book in the series, but gives viewers an idea of how the adventures of the Boxcar Children all started. I love the animation and the music in this DVD. From it’s original publication in 1924 to today’s latest book and now DVD, Gertrude Chandler Warner’s story of four siblings live on. Melody started reading The Boxcar Children books when she was about 4 years old, and have loved each and every book she read, even checking them out from the library multiple times and reading them over and over again. She was really excited about getting to watch the movie. I wasn’t sure Emily would understand the storyline, but she loved it too! We’re not huge movie-watchers, but the girls have watched this DVD four times in the last month, choosing it over their beloved PBS Kids shows. This Collector’s Edition is also packed with fun special features:

  • The Boxcar Children e-book preview
  • The Boxcar Children Guide to Adventure e-book preview
  • Printable Town Map
  • Official Soundtrack
  • About the Author/Museum Featurette
  • Downloadable Activity Kit
  • Stills Gallery
