My girls are still young, but I know it won’t be long before we have “the talk” with them. You know “the talk” I’m talking about. We have a fairly open line of communication with them already, but I know those conversations during the pre-teen years will not be the easiest ones to have with your kids (or your mom and dad, in the case of the kids :p ). Even though we have four years until we have a teen, I love that there is a guide available for me when the time comes. And there are important discussions in there that I probably would miss having without the guide.
What’s in the getaway kit?
- One Tour Guide for the parent
- One Travel Journal for the preteen including 25 follow-up devotions
- Eight CDs containing 5 sessions, scripture memory songs and downloadable MP3s
- Session 1: Beginning the Journey – Challenges, Traps, and Choices
- Session 2: Running With The Herd – Friendships and Peer Pressure
- Session 3: Ready For An Upgrade? – Changes in Him, Changes in Her
- Session 4: Destination: Lé Pure – Setting Boundaries
- Session 5: Crossing The Date Line – Seeing Dating Differently
At first glance, the kit is a bit overwhelming, but once you look at each part, it will be less overwhelming…but then, you think about what you’ll be talking to your pre-teen about, and then, you’ll be overwhelmed again, but then, you remember there are CDs in this thing…whew!
Tour Guide for the parent – Of the almost 100 pages, 32 of them is the actual guide. The remaining pages are the Travel Journal pages with some of the fill-in-the-blank answers. There is a weekend itinerary, in addition to a more detailed sample schedule.
Travel Journal for the preteen including 25 follow-up devotions – Again, it looks like a thick book, but 60-something pages is the actual journal that is used for the sessions during the weekend getaway, and the rest are the pages for the 25 devotions after the trip.
Eight CDs containing 5 sessions, scripture memory songs and downloadable MP3s – Each CD is clearly labeled, so depending on if a parent was going on this getaway with a daughter or a son, you would use the appropriate CD. The last CD has Scripture memory songs from Seeds Family Worship, as well as mp3 files of the sessions.
The 25 follow-up devotions are at the end of the Travel Journal. This is a good opportunity to continue the conversations that were started during the weekend getaway.
We do answer questions as they come and we probably will continue to do so in the upcoming years. While our girls are obviously still too young for a weekend getaway to talk about relationships, sex, and the teen years, it is a great reminder to have those heart-to-heart moments to keep the line of communication open, and also to be thinking about having a special trip before the teen years, even if going through audio CDs might be exactly what you have planned, the kit does give great ideas for talking with your pre-teen about different topics.
“It is designed to be used by a mother and daughter or a father and son when the child is a preteen. It is suggested that the materials be completed over a weekend away from home, as the child may be more open to discussing the topics away from his or her normal environment. If this isn’t possible, the material can be completed over a period of four or five weeks.”
