Monterey: Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.

Address: 720 Cannery Row, Monterey, CA 93940
Phone: (831) 373-1884

As it was a night of a weekend combined with the Aquarium closing, people try to find restaurants close by to eat.  One of these restaurants happens to be Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. on Monterey’s famous Cannery Row that is adjacent to the Aquarium.  There was a 45-minute wait, so we perused Cannery Row and its shops before we were called in to be seated.

Outside, there is a penny souvenir machine with several Gump-related designs and also a bench with a replica of Forrest Gump’s oversized tennis shoes, briefcase, and (life is like a) box of chocolates.  Basically, the bench is a touristy picture taking spot.

The interior of the restaurant is amply decorated with memorabilia and paraphernalia from the movie.

When we were seated, the waitress asked us if we’ve been to a Bubba Gump’s before and this was our first time.  She mentioned the lo-tech paging system that the restaurant uses: the Run Forrest Run or Stop Forrest Stop sign (Forrest being the waiter/waitress).  Like Joe’s Crab Shack that we went to on our Sacramento trip last year, there is a bucket for trash and a roll of paper towels to generously use.

A ping-pong paddle chained to the table served as the drink/dessert menu.

After we put in our order, the waitress asked us one trivia question from the movie.  Is Greenbow, Alabama a real-life town or not?

Our Order:

Starting off with drinks, we ordered a Blueberry Speckled Lemonade, a non-alcoholic Lava Flow, and the two kid’s meal smoothies: Run Forrest Run and Jenny’s Favorite.

For an appetizer, we chose Bubba’s Far Out Dip (spinach, roasted red peppers, artichokes, a Monterey Jack cheese with tortilla chips.  The dip was thick and artichokey, which we don’t mind since we love artichokes!

Joyce and I shared Jenny’s Catch with Lobster Butter Sauce.  This is a pan-seared Tilapia, laid over mashed potatoes with sauteed spinach, and a creamy lobster butter sauce.  The dish was rich and creamy all over from the lobster butter in the sauce and in the mashed potatoes.  Tilapia was tender and not over or undercooked.

The kids chose identical kid’s meals: Mac & Cheese Pleeze.  This meal came on a cardboard “Jenny” shrimp-catching boat (which they got to take home) and besides the Mac & Cheese included french fries, fruit, and blue Jello.  The girls got a real kick out of the meal.

Overall, you come to a place like Bubba Gump’s for the atmosphere and experience and not necessarily quality of the food.  The food here was above average and the atmosphere/experience made it memorable.  I guess people also come for special occasions such as birthdays because there were at least 4 of them while we were eating.
