The Golden West (or “Au” as in the periodic symbol for Gold) is the sister sandwich/take-out shop of The Sentinel on the other side of Market Street.  Like The Sentinel, it’s owned and was started by Dennis Leary.  This place is a literal “hole in the wall” and looking inside looks like a straight-up baked goods factory.  There’s two windows: one for ordering and another for pick-up.  The Golden West posts their ever-changing menu on their website daily.

I ordered the popular BBQ Short Rib Sandwich which had a light & airy brioche bun with black and white sesame seeds.  The sauce was mayonnaise-based, the short rib meat was slow-braised, and the caramelized onions made the sandwich tasty throughout.  Be wary that the sandwich gets lukewarm fairly quickly.

According to other online reviews, they supposedly make good bear claws and other baked goods.  Something I’ve yet to try.  Maybe some day.
